Water Bowls and Cat Feeders
That You Can Use to Feed Your Cat

You will find lots of different types of cat feeders and water bowls at your local pet store for you to use to feed your cat.

The different types are based on ease of use and convenience, as well as price.

To help keep your cat stress free, you will want to select a location in your home in a low traffic area to setup your cat's food and water station. Some people use a corner in their kitchen. Another idea may be a laundry room, if there is enough space.

If you work long hours or generally spend quite a few hours away from your home, or have several cats, you may want to take a look at cat feeders that can hold enough dry kibble food to feed a cat for several days.

This way, you can be sure your cats are cared for even if you are a bit busy.

Types of Cat Feeders For Dry Cat Food

One of the types of cat feeders available is the type of cat feeder that refills the dry kibbles from a reservoir as your cat empties the bowl.

It can be used to feed one cat for several days, or you can feed multiple cats from the feeder.

Drawbacks to this type of cat feeder are:

If you have several cats and one is more aggressive than the other cat(s), then the aggressive one may not leave enough food for the other cats to eat.

For example, two years ago we brought home a newborn male kitten. We already had a 7 year old female cat that was use to having the house to herself.

When it was time for her to eat she didn't eat her food all in one sitting.

She enjoyed grazing and re–visiting her cat food as many times as she wanted to.

As the only cat in the house, that wasn't a problem. However, she wasn't able to continue doing that after we brought our new kitten home. Our new kitten, Louie, loves to eat as much as he can and doesn't hesitate to push Sox out of the way.

Louie isn't aggressive, but he has learned that Sox will back away from the food when he shows up. We also found that this made it more difficult for us to know if Sox was getting enough food or not.

Another thing we quickly discovered is that if the dry kibbles were left in the cat feeder for longer than 48 hours they would get stale and Sox would get sick after eating them.

Another type of cat feeder that is available is the automatic cat feeder.

This feeder has several compartments. The feeder's lid has an opening that allows the cat to eat out of one compartment at a time.

A battery operated motor rotates the lid using a timer so that a different compartment is revealed at timed intervals. We haven't tried that one, but I can see how it would be useful to have it.

To solve our problem of Louie eating all the cat food we eventually had to create two cat food stations. One for each of them.

When you are shopping for cat food bowls, look for bowls that are dishwasher safe and unbreakable.

We feed our cats wet cat food so we use two hard plastic cat bowls for their food.

If you have a single cat, you may want to take a look at a combination feeder that holds two bowls, one for food and one for water. These feeders allow you to keep the feeding area tidy, and are easy to clean, since you can take the bowls out of the feeder to wash and disinfect them.

For the fussiest cats, you can shop for heated food bowls. These bowls are also a great way to provide local strays with water during the winter months.

To keep your cats healthy, you should clean the food bowls daily.

If the bowls are dishwasher safe, cleaning is as simple as throwing out old food and dropping the dishes in the dishwasher. Never leave food sitting in the bowls for long periods of time, as dry food can grow stale and soft food can spoil.

In addition, be sure that you clean your cat's water bowl each day and re–fill it with fresh, clean water. We use a filtered water dispenser for water for our cats, which we find very convenient because we only have to clean it on a weekly basis.
