Help Your Cat Feel Comfortable

As a new cat owner you may not be familiar with the various cat products that your cat will need to feel comfortable in his new home.

Below is a list of cat products that you can purchase to help you get started in creating a welcoming home for your new cat.

Cat Food

There are two different types of cat food. Dry kibbles and wet can food.

Both the dry and wet food are available in many different types and flavors. As we have discovered in our house recently, cats can be fussy about the type and flavor of their food.

It is always a good idea to speak to your Veterinarian for recommendations about which cat food will be good for your cat.

Some types of cat food are not good for kittens because their teeth may not be fully developed yet.

Your Veterinarian can also give you instructions on the proper amount of food that your cat should be eating on a daily basis so that your cat maintains a healthy weight.

Cat Food and Water Station

While some people may use two bowls from their kitchen for water and food, other people may look at buying cat food and water dispensers for their cats.

If you are feeding your cat dry cat food there are several types of cat feeders that will help keep the cat food from going stale.

Some can also be programmed to dispense the cat food whether you are home or not. The cat feeders are great for someone that works long hours away from home. It will be low maintenance for you and it will help your cat stay on a regular meal schedule.

You can also buy water dispensers that you can clean and fill up with water once a week. The dispenser filters the water and maintains a continuous clean flow of water.

Soft Cushy Cat Bed

When selecting a cat bed, consider that most cats love warm small spaces to hide or sleep in. While some cat beds are open baskets, you can also find cat beds that are dome shaped so that your cat feels like they have a roof over them.

Cat beds are available in many different shapes, colors and textures. This will make it easy for you to find something that fits in well with the style of your home.

To make it easier to clean your cat's bed, you may want to put a small towel or blanket over the cushion in the bed. That way when your cat sheds, it will shed on the towel, which you can then wash when you do your laundry.

Litter Box and Litter

Even if you decide to let your cat go outside, a litter box in your home is still a necessity. Kittens are trained to use litter boxes and once they are trained, they are quite comfortable with them.

If you have more than one cat, then you should have more than one litter box. Otherwise you may find that one cat uses the litter box and the other one doesn't.

If you are looking for your first litter box, you may want to consider one with a lid. The lid will help to prevent litter from flying everywhere when your cat uses the litter box.

You may find that keeping the litter box clean can become somewhat of a chore. So with that in mind, manufactures have come up with some pretty fancy and easy to use litter boxes, such as the CatGenie, Bionaire Odor Grabber and the Litter Robot.

Also take a look for a cat trapper mat to put in front of the box. That way when your cat comes out of the litter box, his claws will hit the mat and hopefully release some of the litter that he has caught in his paws before he runs around the house.

Look for cat litter that clumps up when wet. This will make it easier for you to clean the litter box. You can scoop out the clumps without changing out the entire box of litter.

Try to routinely clean the litter box 3 times a week. Once you scoop the clumps out, remember to add a cup of fresh litter to the litter box.

Cat litter with baking soda in it will also help to keep the litter box smell better.

Cat Toys

Certain cat breeds will enjoy a variety of cat toys to play with. Playing with cat toys also helps them to exercise their little bodies.

Some cat toys are filled with cat nip or honeysuckle, which your cat may find enjoyable.

I once had a cat that loved playing soccer on the kitchen floor with a wine cork. One of our current cats prefers playing soccer with ice cubes.

Get several different types of cat toys and you will quickly see which ones your cat likes the most.

Cat Harness

Cats love fresh air. However, in many locations, if you let your cat go outside on its own, you may never see it again. That is where cat harnesses and leashes come in handy.

Depending on your cat's behaviour, you may be able to use a harness and leash with your cat and take him for a walk outside with you, just like a dog.

If you like the idea, you will need to test it out with your cat to see what he thinks.

Cat Carrier

A cat carrier is an important item that you should use whenever you take your cat in your car, whether you are going to the Veterinarian, or going on a road trip. Letting your cat roam around in your vehicle while you are driving can be dangerous for both of you.

Cat carriers come in so many different styles these days. It shouldn't be a problem to find a good one.

Cat Scratching Post or Tree

Cats love to scratch. They will try to scratch the carpet on the stairs, and depending on the fabric, they may also try scratching your furniture.

There are several things you can do to stop that.

First, you can setup a cat tree or scratching post in your home so that your cat can use that.

Secondly, you can keep your cat's claws trimmed so that they do not have long sharp claws.

And thirdly, many cats can actually be trained not to scratch the furniture or the carpet, but you need to start that training from the beginning.

Cat Grooming Supplies

There are several products that you will need to look after your cat on a regular basis. One is a good brush for combing your cat's hair and keeping it from getting tangled up. Brushing your cat on a regular basis will also cut down on the shedding and the hairballs.

The other important product is nail clippers. There are special nail clippers to keep your cat's claws short. If you have never clipped a cat's claws before, then make sure that you have an expert teach you how to do it first. You could potentially hurt your cat if you have not been taught how to properly trim their claws.

Pet Door

There are several uses for a pet door for your cat. If you do allow your cat to go outside on its own, then a pet door could be installed on the bottom of your back door, so that your cat can go in and out on its own.

Another use for a pet door may be for a location within your home. For example, if the litter box is in a room where you normally keep the door closed, you could install a pet door in the bottom of the door, to allow your cat access to that room whenever he needs his litter box.
